### Lesson Plan: Water Purification
#### Subject: Prevocational Studies
#### Grade Level: Primary 1
#### Duration: 45 minutes
---
#### Objective:
1. To understand the importance of clean water.
2. To learn basic methods of purifying water at home.
3. To recognize the steps involved in a simple water purification process.
#### Materials:
1. Dirty water sample (mix some soil in water)
2. Clean water sample
3. Transparent glass jars or bottles
4. Coffee filter or cheesecloth
5. Sand
6. Gravel
7. Activated charcoal (optional)
8. Worksheet with matching and coloring activity
9. Crayons or markers
10. Picture book or video about water purification (age-appropriate)
11. Hand sanitizers
#### Introduction (10 minutes):
1. **Greeting and Attendance:** Welcome the students and take attendance.
2. **Hook:** Show the students two jars - one with clean water and one with dirty water. Ask, "Which one would you drink?" Discuss why it's important to drink clean water.
3. **Objective:** Explain that today we will learn how to make dirty water clean, which is called water purification.
#### Instruction (15 minutes):
1. **Story/Video:** Read a short picture book or show a video about the importance of clean water and simple purification methods (like boiling, filtering, and settling).
2. **Discussion:** Discuss the story/video with the students. Ask questions to ensure understanding.
#### Activity (15 minutes):
1. **Demonstration:** Gather the students around a table. Show the materials and explain the steps:
- **Step 1:** Pour the dirty water through a coffee filter or cheesecloth to remove large particles.
- **Step 2:** Create a simple water filter using a jar layered with gravel, sand, and activated charcoal. Show how you would pour the water through these layers starting with gravel at the bottom, then sand, and finally, charcoal if available.
- **Step 3:** Let the water come out clearer than before. Explain how each layer helps to clean the water.
2. **Hands-on Activity:** Let the students, in small groups, try to pour water through the coffee filter or cheesecloth.
#### Follow-up Activity (5 minutes):
1. **Worksheet:** Distribute worksheets that have images of the steps in the purification process. Ask students to use crayons to color the pictures and then draw lines to match the steps in the correct order.
#### Conclusion (5 minutes):
1. **Recap:** Review the main points of the lesson – the importance of clean water, what water purification means, and the simple steps to purify water.
2. **Q&A:** Allow students to ask any questions they might have.
3. **Hand Sanitization:** Ensure students wash their hands or use hand sanitizer after handling the materials.
4. **Closure:** Praise the students for their participation and effort.
---
#### Assessment:
- **Observation:** Monitor student participation during activities and discussion.
- **Worksheet:** Check the accuracy of the matching and coloring activities to ensure understanding of the purification steps.
#### Homework:
- **Home Activity:** Ask each student to explain to their family how they can filter water using simple objects at home and share their experience in the next class.
#### Reflection:
- **Post-Lesson Review:** Reflect on what went well and what could be improved for future lessons on similar topics.
